Rewalsar, Mandi, Himachal Pradesh
Rewalsar is a remarkable small town and a Nagar Panchayat situated in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, a northern state in India. It is located 28 kilometers from the district center of Mandi. Locally, Rewalsar is referred to as Trisangam. The renowned Rawalsar Holy Lake, known as ‘Tso Pema’ among Tibetans, is linked to Padmasambhava, who is often regarded as the second Buddha.
According to one version of the legend, King Arashadhar of Mandi ordered Padmasambhava to be burned alive due to rumors that the Guru had attempted to impart the Dharma to his daughter, which was not accepted at the time. The pyre blazed for an entire week, producing thick clouds of black smoke. However, after this period, a lake emerged at the site of the burning, and Padmasambhava reappeared as a 16-year-old boy from a lotus flower in the center of the lake.
Filled with remorse for his actions, the king arranged for his daughter to marry Padmasambhava. It was from Tso Pema that Padmasambhava journeyed to Tibet to disseminate Vajrayana Buddhism. The town of Rewalsar is well-known for its Buddhist activities and the significance of its lake. This lake, which has a square shape and a distinct shoreline, serves as an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists. It is also famous for its floating island, and the waters of the lake are believed to flow underground from Rewalsar to ‘Nagchala’.
